Montreal Canadiens forward Patrik Laine shared a personal message on his Instagram this morning, offering a glimpse into his mental health journey through his initiative, From Us to You.
In a heartfelt video, the Finnish sniper spoke candidly about his struggles and offered valuable advice. He said, “One of the best pieces of advice ever given to me was to be brave enough to ask for help. Personally, I’ve struggled with that a lot. I feel like with a lot of people, there is a lot of shame, a lot of pride preventing them from reaching out.”
Laine emphasized the importance of talking as a form of healing, adding that those around you genuinely want to help. He shared that his own mental health journey includes meeting with a therapist three times a week, calling it “a lifesaver.”
Last season, Laine entered the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance program after 18 regular-season games. His decision to join the program was motivated by a desire to address life challenges outside of hockey and to reduce the pressure he placed on himself.
This summer, after leaving the program, Laine and his fiancée, Jordan Leigh, launched From Us to You in response to the many people who reached out to share their own mental health stories. Through the initiative, Laine and Leigh encourage others to share their experiences, offering a platform for both written and video submissions via their social media.
Traded to the Montreal Canadiens from the Columbus Blue Jackets this summer, Laine is eager to make an impactful debut for the team at the start of the 2024-25 NHL season.
