Driffield Rugby Union Football Club (RUFC) has raised thousands of pounds to support mental health initiatives for men, continuing its partnership with Hull and East Yorkshire Mind for a second year. The fundraising efforts, which have surpassed £10,000, come in the wake of the tragic death of Ollie Robinson-Booth, a 21-year-old club member who took his own life in 2023.
The club’s commitment to raising awareness and funds for mental health support follows Robinson-Booth’s untimely passing. In response to his death, Driffield RUFC has worked closely with Hull and East Yorkshire Mind, organizing charity events and initiatives aimed at making a positive impact on men’s mental health in the community.
A Legacy of Support
Simon Hornby, chairman of Driffield RUFC, shared the club’s determination to create lasting change in the wake of their loss. “When Ollie passed away, the club really pulled together to try and make a difference and raise as much money as possible to go towards this fantastic charity,” Hornby said.
The club has been collaborating with Hull and East Yorkshire Mind for over a year, hosting charity match days and festivals. In addition, more than 30 members participated in the Movember challenge, raising almost £3,500 for the cause. Hornby emphasized that the club’s efforts are not just about the money but also the impact they can have. “If the money we have raised can help at least one person, we have reached our own goal,” he said.
A Powerful Message
Marie-Louise Robinson, a community fundraiser at Hull and East Yorkshire Mind, expressed the charity’s gratitude for the club’s ongoing support. “We are deeply moved by the club’s contributions. Their efforts not only raised an incredible amount of money but also sent a powerful message about the importance of mental health and supporting one another,” she said.
Robinson highlighted the significance of Robinson-Booth’s story, acknowledging it as a heart-breaking reminder of why mental health work is so crucial. “The way the club and community have rallied together in his memory is truly inspiring,” she added.
The ongoing partnership between Driffield RUFC and Hull and East Yorkshire Mind serves as a testament to the positive impact that local communities can have in raising awareness and providing support for those struggling with mental health issues, particularly among men.
