Srinagar, February 19 — In a landmark move to enhance student welfare, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) Kashmir has officially inaugurated its Mental Health Counselling Cell at the Shalimar campus. The new initiative, a collaboration between SKUAST and organizations like KASHMER (Kashmir American Society for Healthcare, Medical Education, and Research) and the Help Poor Voluntary Trust (HPVT), aims to offer comprehensive mental health support to students.
The inauguration ceremony, held on February 19, was graced by the Vice Chancellor of SKUAST Kashmir, Professor Nazir Ahmad Ganai, alongside notable figures such as Professor Mohammad Muzafar Khan (Consultant and Clinical Psychologist), Professor Nelofar Banday (Dean of Students’ Welfare), and Dr. Syed Riyaz Ahmad (Project Head, KASHMER). Also present were Farooq Ahmad Bhat (Chairman, HPVT), faculty members, medical officers, and students from across the university.
A Holistic Approach to Student Development
Speaking at the inauguration, Professor Ganai emphasized that the initiative is part of SKUAST Kashmir’s broader commitment to the holistic development of students. He noted that while academic excellence remains a core focus, mental resilience is equally critical for students’ overall well-being. Reflecting on the university’s deep cultural roots in Kashmiri Sufi traditions, Professor Ganai highlighted how these values promote inner strength and perseverance—qualities essential in managing life’s stresses.

Professor Mohammad Muzafar Khan, a leading figure in the field of psychology, also shared his insights on the importance of mental health within society. He advocated for a bio-psychosocial model to better address mental health issues, stressing that mental well-being is integral to societal prosperity. He expressed optimism about the positive impact the counselling cell will have on students, helping them navigate academic and personal challenges.
Creating a Supportive and Thriving Environment
In her welcome address, Professor Nelofar Banday reaffirmed SKUAST Kashmir’s ongoing dedication to student welfare, noting the university’s aim to foster an environment where students can thrive not just academically but also emotionally. This focus on mental health is seen as a crucial step in addressing rising mental health challenges among the student population.

The inauguration received enthusiastic support from Dr. Syed Riyaz Ahmad and Mr. Farooq Ahmad Bhat, who praised SKUAST for taking the initiative to strengthen mental health support on campus. Both organizations expressed their commitment to continued collaboration, ensuring the success and sustainability of the counselling cell.

The event also featured the release of informational booklets aimed at raising awareness about mental health and guiding students in managing mental well-being. The proceedings were expertly conducted by Dr. Seemi Lohani, Assistant Students’ Welfare Officer, who concluded the ceremony with a heartfelt vote of thanks.
