Premier David Eby has assured that Prince George will receive dedicated mental health and involuntary care resources, calling it a “100 percent” certainty. In an interview with The Citizen before the 2025 BC Natural Resources Forum, Eby discussed his priorities for the region, particularly focusing on mental health, addiction, and brain injury services.
Eby emphasized the importance of addressing the complex social issues in Prince George, particularly the Moccasin Flats encampment, and stressed the shared goal with local leaders, including the mayor, council, and Lheidli T’enneh First Nation, to provide housing solutions and necessary services to prevent the formation of future encampments. Mental health and addiction services are key components of this work.
In partnership with Lheidli T’enneh Chief Dolleen Logan, discussions are underway to establish a centre for excellence in mental health to support families and prevent them from falling into situations like those at Moccasin Flats. Eby also highlighted the provincial strategy being developed with Dr. Daniel Vigo, BC’s chief scientific advisor for psychiatry, toxic drugs, and concurrent disorders, to provide specialized care for individuals facing brain injuries and addiction, including involuntary care options.
Regarding mental health facilities, Premier Eby confirmed that the region would see dedicated services, including expanded care at local hospitals, as the provincial government works with Prince George to address these critical needs.
On the economic front, Eby discussed efforts to clear the way for new opportunities in Prince George, even in light of the cancellation of Fortescue’s proposed hydrogen production facility. Despite this, the government is committed to supporting further projects, ensuring that BC’s power supply will be available for future initiatives in the city.
Eby’s remarks underscore the government’s commitment to improving the well-being of Prince George’s residents and ensuring the city’s prosperity, aligning local success with broader provincial goals.
