Rowan University and the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) have formed a partnership aimed at enhancing psychiatric care at Ancora Psychiatric Hospital. This collaboration will improve mental health services in South Jersey by integrating academic medicine with clinical expertise, contributing to better treatment outcomes and greater access to specialized care.
The partnership, beginning in January 2025, will involve Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine’s (SOM) Department of Psychiatry contributing up to six psychiatrists to Ancora’s medical staff. This will expand Ancora’s ability to provide high-quality psychiatric care for its patients, who range from those dealing with mental illness to those with co-occurring substance use disorders and medical conditions.
Ali Houshmand, President of Rowan University, expressed the importance of this partnership in addressing the growing mental health needs in the region. “This collaboration exemplifies the kind of forward-thinking partnerships that enable us to address urgent community needs,” Houshmand said. The partnership also underscores Rowan University’s ongoing commitment to advancing healthcare and fostering deeper understanding of mental health challenges.
The collaboration is expected to not only strengthen psychiatric services at Ancora but also create valuable training opportunities for future psychiatrists. Richard Jermyn, Dean of Rowan-Virtua SOM, emphasized the role of the partnership in advancing both patient care and medical education, providing high standards of psychiatric care to the most vulnerable populations.
This agreement aligns with broader efforts to enhance mental health care across New Jersey, with contributions from leading health care providers like Virtua Health, Cooper University Health Care, and others. The integration of Rowan’s academic resources into Ancora’s specialized care facilities represents a significant step toward creating a sustainable, high-quality mental health care system for the future.
