The Vernon Township Community Mental Health Board (MHB) has awarded $140,000 in grants to eight local nonprofits that provide essential mental health services, addiction recovery programs, and support for individuals with developmental disabilities. These funds are aimed at enhancing the wellbeing of Vernon Township residents.
The organizations receiving grants are: Erie Family Health Centers, GiGi’s Playhouse in Deerfield, Glenkirk, JCC Chicago, Lauri Bauer Foundation for Sudden Loss, Sanjeevani 4U, Special Recreation Association of Central Lake County, and the Stand Strong Coalition. In total, 16 other agencies were granted similar funding in the first round of awards in early 2024, recognizing their commitment to improving mental health and wellness for the community.
Mental Health Board President Noelle Moore expressed the board’s pride in collaborating with these organizations. “This funding ensures vital services continue to reach those who need them, and also ensures cost is not a factor. Our community grants are helping to foster a stronger, healthier community for all our residents,” Moore said.
As the local mental health authority for Vernon Township, the MHB’s role encompasses addressing mental health issues, drug and alcohol prevention programs, and services for individuals with developmental disabilities. Operating under the Community Mental Health Act (405 ILCS 20/1), the Board is responsible for planning, funding, coordinating, and evaluating services aimed at improving the emotional and mental health of Township residents.
The MHB’s Community Grants program is integral to the Board’s mission of managing the Township’s mental health tax, and the awarded agencies meet stringent service, fiscal, and administrative accountability requirements. Eligible organizations must demonstrate their ability to deliver impactful services while adhering to state and local regulations.
The MHB is celebrating its two-year anniversary this month and remains committed to reducing the stigma surrounding mental health, raising awareness about local service providers, and breaking down barriers that hinder residents from accessing services. This initiative continues to play a key role in enhancing the mental health infrastructure within Vernon Township.
