The Desert Sun Counselling & Resource Centre, a vital mental health organization in the South Okanagan, has extended its 2024 holiday fundraiser deadline after donations fell significantly below the target set for the year.
Earlier this month, the Centre revealed that it had raised $40,000 of its $75,000 fundraising goal for the Empty Bowls and Baskets Campaign. This fundraising initiative helps support a variety of local mental health programs through 24 services, such as family programs, safe housing, and crisis support.
Despite the progress, the amount raised so far is $20,000 less than the $68,000 raised in 2023, highlighting the challenges the organization faces in meeting its financial goals for this year.
Impact of the Fundraiser
The Empty Bowls and Baskets fundraiser has long been a cornerstone for Desert Sun, providing essential financial support for the mental health and well-being of community members. The funds raised go directly toward assisting those in need through the organization’s diverse programs, which help individuals and families cope with various mental health struggles, housing instability, and crisis situations.
In a social media post, the organization expressed its gratitude for the donations received, acknowledging the hardships many in the community are facing this year. “We know this has been a tough year for many, and we deeply appreciate every single donation received so far,” Desert Sun said.
Extended Deadline and Community Support
In response to the donation shortfall, Desert Sun has decided to extend the campaign deadline until the end of January, taking advantage of a federal charitable donation extension deadline of February 28, which was introduced due to the Canada Post strike during the holiday season.
“We are so grateful to everyone who has supported our 2024 Empty Bowls and Baskets Campaign,” the post continued. “Every dollar makes a difference, and we are truly grateful to live and work in such an amazing, supportive community.”
Final Call for Donations
The Centre is calling on community members to help close the gap by donating before the extended deadline. Their message emphasizes the impact that every contribution, no matter how large or small, can have on improving mental health support for individuals in need.
“Together, we can make a lasting impact,” the post said, urging people to share the campaign with others who may be interested in contributing to the cause.
Desert Sun Counselling & Resource Centre’s commitment to providing critical mental health services remains unwavering, and with continued community support, the organization hopes to reach its fundraising goal and continue making a positive difference in the lives of those who rely on its services.
