Suicide rates are increasingly becoming a significant issue among adults aged 60 and above in Fiji, as revealed by Lifeline Fiji (LLF). In response to this growing concern, BSP Financial Group Limited (BSP) has donated $10,000 to support Lifeline Fiji’s ongoing mental health advocacy and community well-being initiatives.
The donation, which also included Christmas hampers and office supplies for LLF agents, was handed over at a special event attended by BSP’s chief operating officer George Barratt, who praised the dedicated efforts of Lifeline Fiji’s counselors.
A Lifeline for Those in Crisis
During the handover ceremony, Barratt expressed his admiration for the work of Lifeline Fiji, emphasizing its vital role in providing crisis intervention and saving lives. “The work of Lifeline Fiji goes beyond crisis intervention. It saves lives,” Barratt stated. He highlighted the significance of LLF’s approach, which combines the use of native languages and collaboration with local organizations, making it both impactful and effective in reaching vulnerable communities.
BSP’s donation ensures that LLF’s counselors have the resources they need to continue their heroic work, providing mental health support to those most at risk.
Growing Concerns for Older Adults
Jeremaia Merekula, director of Lifeline Fiji, shared troubling statistics that shed light on the increasing prevalence of suicides among older adults. According to data collected between January and October 2024, LLF recorded 136 cases of suicide and attempted suicide, slightly lower than the 156 cases during the same period in 2023. However, the statistics show a worrying rise in completed suicides among individuals aged 60 and above.
Merekula noted that older adults are becoming an increasingly vulnerable demographic, with isolation, loneliness, declining health, and financial insecurity contributing to the mental health challenges faced by this group. “Older adults, particularly those above 60, are becoming an increasingly vulnerable group in society,” he said. He emphasized the importance of community support and connection to help combat these issues and provide the necessary assistance for this aging population.
Lifeline Fiji’s Ongoing Efforts
Since 2017, BSP has been a long-standing supporter of Lifeline Fiji, contributing to the delivery of crucial crisis intervention services. These services play a critical role in assisting individuals facing mental health challenges, particularly those at risk of suicide. To access these services, individuals are encouraged to call Lifeline Fiji’s hotline at 1543.
Through its continued support, BSP is helping Lifeline Fiji to provide life-saving mental health services and ensuring that individuals in crisis have access to the help they need. As mental health challenges continue to rise, the collaboration between BSP and Lifeline Fiji remains a crucial component in tackling the growing suicide crisis in the country.
