JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) — Arkansas State University is focusing on student mental health this December by offering free counseling services through its HOWL Service Center and the Wilson Counseling Center.
Dr. Savannah Cormier, a counselor at the university, noted that the holiday season often exacerbates mental health challenges, with many students experiencing increased levels of anxiety and depression. “We see more students struggling with depression and anxiety during the holidays,” Cormier explained, highlighting the unique pressures that the season can bring.
For many students, the stress of returning home can be just as overwhelming as academic or financial concerns. “They are adults, they are college students, but when they go back into those family dynamics, that can increase stress levels,” Cormier said.
While some students may retreat into isolation when dealing with feelings of sadness, anxiety, or depression, Cormier emphasized the importance of reaching out for support. “When you’re struggling with emotions like sadness, depression, anxiety, and anger, those feelings can push you further into isolation,” she said. “My advice is to talk to someone — it’s important to reach out.”
The free counseling services at both centers aim to provide students with the resources they need to manage their mental health during a potentially challenging time of year.
