A charity dedicated to improving young people’s mental health is launching a major fundraising campaign as it marks its 30th anniversary. Off the Record (OTR), which supports emotional wellbeing and self-confidence among young people aged 11 to 25 across Bath and North East Somerset, has set a goal of raising £100,000 by the end of the year to fund essential new projects.
Founded in 1993, OTR has become the largest provider of mental health support for young people in the region, offering a wide range of counselling and support services in Bath, Bristol, and South Gloucestershire. The charity says it has witnessed a significant surge in demand for its services, with referrals increasing by 40% in the past two years. This rise is attributed to the mental health challenges young people face in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, compounded by ongoing financial pressures and social stressors.
To address these pressing needs, OTR launched its ‘Young Futures’ fundraising appeal in 2023. So far, the charity has raised £73,000, with the goal of reaching £100,000 through donations and festive fundraising events. The funds will support a range of vital initiatives designed to make a lasting impact on the mental wellbeing of young people in the area.
Phil Walters, CEO of Off the Record, expressed gratitude for the generosity shown by local businesses, individuals, and grant-making trusts. “Thanks to their support, the Young Futures Appeal is progressing well,” Walters said. “We’re already seeing the difference these funds are making in the lives of young people through various programs and initiatives that have been launched.”
One of the charity’s key priorities is to address the mental health needs of young people of colour, who are statistically more likely to experience mental health challenges and discrimination. In response, OTR plans to launch a new project, Connected Roots, aimed specifically at supporting young Black people in the community.
As it celebrates three decades of service, OTR’s leadership is focused on securing the long-term sustainability of its work in the region. With continued support from the community, the charity aims to expand its services and ensure its projects have a lasting, positive effect on the mental health and wellbeing of local youth.
