Mason, OH – GeneSight, a company specializing in mental health medication, has expanded its wellness services to better serve the community. The company focuses on how genetics influence the body’s response to psychiatric medications, providing a tailored approach to treatment.
GeneSight offers a convenient blood test or cheek swab, which is sent from a doctor’s office to the company’s lab for analysis. This test identifies the most effective medications for conditions like depression, based on the patient’s genetic profile.
“When it comes to psychiatric conditions, if you’re feeling down or anxious, you want the medication that’s going to help you feel better quickly,” said Emile Breeing, a psychiatric nurse practitioner at GeneSight. “You don’t want to spend months or even a year trying medications that might not work, or deal with side effects like weight gain or fatigue. We all have lives to live, and we don’t want medication side effects getting in the way.”
The test results are sent back to the prescribing doctor, allowing them to create a medication plan specifically tailored to the patient’s needs, reducing the traditional trial-and-error process that often accompanies mental health treatments.
“GeneSight ensures clinicians have a clearer understanding of the best treatment strategy for their patients, helping them on their path to wellness,” said Fred Fantazzia, General Manager of GeneSight’s mental health division.
The company’s goal is to streamline the treatment process by identifying the most effective medication right from the start, potentially improving outcomes and reducing the time it takes for patients to feel better.
“In just 36 hours, we can identify variations in patients’ DNA that may affect how they respond to psychiatric medications,” said Shirelyn Iyoha, Assistant Lab Director at GeneSight.
