Voters in Winnebago County have approved an extension of the one-half percent sales tax that funds mental health services across the region. The tax, which was set to expire in June 2026, has been critical in generating approximately $13 million to support a range of mental health initiatives.
A key beneficiary of these funds has been the Crisis Co-Response Team, which works alongside law enforcement officers from Rockford and Winnebago County on emergency calls. The team, made up of mental health professionals, accompanies officers to help address behavioral health crises, providing immediate support and ensuring a more effective and compassionate response to those in need.
The extension of the tax aims to further improve the safety and efficacy of these police interventions, ensuring better outcomes for individuals experiencing mental health emergencies. By continuing to fund these vital services, the county is focused on enhancing public safety and strengthening the overall response to behavioral health crises in the community.
