EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – In a significant effort to bolster mental health resources for students, the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and the Canutillo Independent School District (CISD) are partnering to provide mental health training to hundreds of educators and support staff. The 2024 Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Bowl is set to take place on Friday, November 1, at Garcia Elementary School, located at 6550 Westside Drive.
The event aims to deliver Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) training, equipping participants with the skills to identify, understand, and respond to mental health and substance use challenges in children. According to a news release from UTEP, this initiative is part of the ongoing Mental Health Service Provision and Awareness Program, which highlights the collaboration between UTEP and CISD.
Approximately 784 staff members from CISD will receive YMHFA training during this district-wide event. Sessions will be led by certified YMHFA trainers from UTEP and affiliated organizations, such as Emergence Health Network, to enhance mental health awareness and support among educators.
Rosario Olivera, MSW, an instructor in UTEP’s Department of Social Work, is the principal investigator overseeing the project, which is funded by a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. This partnership underscores a shared commitment to improving mental health services for students within the district.
