Scarborough, Whitby, and Ryedale Mind are proud to announce the launch of The Wellness Bridge, a new initiative designed to assist individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) in addressing cancer risks. Funded by the NHS Humber and North Yorkshire Cancer Alliance, the project highlights the critical need to support mental health alongside physical health in the realms of cancer prevention and treatment.
This launch coincides with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which aims to enhance cancer screening and early detection efforts. Individuals with SMI are statistically less likely to participate in routine cancer screenings and often face lifestyle challenges, such as smoking and poor diet, that heighten their cancer risk. The Wellness Bridge seeks to offer personalized strategies to help these individuals overcome barriers to accessing screenings and improving their overall health.
Key services provided by The Wellness Bridge include peer support, access to counseling in partnership with Community Counselling, and practical assistance such as educational resources to facilitate attendance at cancer screenings, appointments, and treatments. Additionally, the program offers tailored support in areas such as physical activity, nutrition, and habit change, while also connecting clients to local support services.
At SWR Mind, we recognize the challenges of making lifestyle changes, particularly for those struggling with mental health issues. The Wellness Bridge is committed to supporting clients at their individual starting points—whether it’s beginning with five minutes of walking or feeling apprehensive about booking a screening appointment. Our project is designed to help individuals take their next steps at their own pace, without judgment.
