LINCOLN, Neb. – The Lincoln Regional Center celebrated its 15th annual walk for mental health awareness, bringing together community members to promote wellness and recovery. This year’s event featured inspiring speeches from mental health advocates before participants set off on a scenic route around the center’s expansive 100-acre grounds.
With over 200 participants each year, the walk serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and support. Rachel Johnson, a religious coordinator at the center, emphasized the widespread impact of mental health conditions, stating, “It’s incredibly important to recognize that mental health conditions affect just about everyone at some point in their life, hence the need for awareness.”
Reflecting on her 17 years at the center, Johnson expressed pride in the community, saying, “The people who are part of this community care, do transformational work. And it’s important that people know that hope for recovery is real, and we see that every day.”
Organized by volunteer staff, patients, and community members, the event fosters a sense of unity and hope. It aims to remind individuals that if they or a loved one needs help, resources are available, including the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988. The walk not only raises awareness but also promotes the message that recovery is possible and support is always accessible.
