Carmarthen, West Wales — The West Wales Motorcycle Club is making a significant impact by combining a passion for motorcycles with community engagement and mental health support. Established in 2017, this not-for-profit organization offers a unique approach to well-being through hands-on mechanical work and social interaction.
The club hosts bi-weekly workshops every second Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., providing members access to a fully equipped space for motorcycle repair and restoration. Participants breathe new life into project bikes, often deemed beyond repair, through their collective expertise. This process fosters a sense of accomplishment, builds confidence, and alleviates feelings of isolation among members.
Inclusivity lies at the core of the club’s mission. Membership does not require owning a motorcycle, allowing anyone with an interest to join the community. Whether individuals want to learn about motorcycle maintenance or simply enjoy camaraderie over a cup of tea, the club offers a welcoming and supportive environment. Many members have backgrounds in mental health support, including trained mental health first aiders, ensuring that those in need have access to a compassionate ear and referrals to specialist organizations.
Initially supported by a substantial National Lottery Grant, the club has since maintained its operations through smaller grants and recently secured additional funding from the National Lottery’s All Wales Grant Scheme. This funding guarantees at least another year of operations, allowing the club to further its mission.
The workshops serve as a hub for mechanical learning while promoting positive mental health. The collaborative effort of restoring motorcycles provides a therapeutic outlet, enabling members to connect with others who share their interests. Through these social and mechanical interactions, the club presents an innovative approach to community well-being.
Graham Sines, the club’s Secretary, emphasizes the project’s uniqueness and invites interested individuals to visit during a workshop session to witness the initiative firsthand. The club’s dedication to inclusivity, social interaction, and mental well-being positions it as a standout organization within the West Wales community.
