Milford, Connecticut — Despite damp weather conditions, hundreds of cyclists gathered in Milford on Sunday morning for the “Folks on Spokes and Step Forward” charity ride, now in its 33rd year. This event, the longest-running charity ride in Connecticut, focuses on raising awareness about mental health issues and the consequences of neglecting them.
Organizer Ray Vitali shared insights with News 8, highlighting the often invisible nature of mental health struggles. “It’s very difficult to identify an individual who is either anxious or depressed. You don’t see a bandage around the head; you see a broken arm or a broken leg, but you don’t see that broken emotion,” he explained.
This year’s event featured several new attractions, including therapy animals, interactive art, face painting, and relaxation therapy, all aimed at enhancing participants’ experiences. A poignant Remembrance Ceremony was also held to honor those who have lost their lives to addiction and mental health struggles.
The fundraising goal for this year’s ride is set at $50,000, which will directly support Bridges Healthcare’s local mental health and addiction recovery programs. The commitment of participants and organizers underscores the vital importance of mental health awareness and support in the community.
