As part of our ongoing observance of Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re proud to spotlight Senior Firefighter and Whanaungatanga Project Lead Josh Darby, who has recently been honored with the Mental Health Champion award at the New Zealand Workplace Health and Safety Awards.
Josh’s leadership in the Whanaungatanga Programme reflects his dedication and passion for enhancing the mental well-being of firefighters and commanders. This initiative aims to tackle the organizational factors that contribute to mental health challenges within the fire service.
The Whanaungatanga Programme is a collaborative effort that brings together career firefighters, management, and leading researchers and clinicians to effect meaningful change in mental health support. It is delivered in partnership with Movember, the New Zealand Professional Firefighters Union (NZPFU), and the Fire and Emergency Commanders Association (FECA). The program’s impact is further evaluated by experts from Auckland University of Technology (AUT).
This recognition underscores the importance of collective action in promoting mental health and well-being within the firefighting community.
Ka pai te mahi, Josh! Your commitment to this vital cause is truly inspiring.
