KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A local nonprofit, Elevating Men, is organizing a town hall this weekend to address what many see as a growing mental health crisis in Kansas City. The event aims to bring together lawmakers, mental health professionals, and the public for a critical discussion on improving mental health support and accessibility.
Founded by A.L. Johnson, Elevating Men was born out of his personal struggles with mental health following the death of his father in 2020. Johnson’s mission is to encourage men to openly discuss their mental health, a topic often stigmatized, especially in male communities.
The town hall will feature key speakers, including Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, Missouri Senator Barbara Washington, and Missouri Representative Mike Johnson, all of whom will contribute to the conversation on how to make mental health services more available and effective in the region.
“Most importantly, we want to ensure that people’s voices are heard,” Johnson said, emphasizing the importance of the upcoming election year. “It’s crucial that our politicians and representatives understand exactly what changes we want to see.”
The town hall is scheduled for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Robert Mohart Multipurpose Center in Kansas City. The event is free to attend, but participants are encouraged to register in advance by visiting Elevating Men’s social media pages.
This initiative highlights the growing recognition of mental health challenges and aims to foster meaningful dialogue between the community and policymakers.
