A prominent mental health charity with deep roots in Galway is encouraging individuals across Ireland to take a chilly plunge this October to raise funds for essential services. Helplink Mental Health has announced the return of its annual COLDTOBER fundraising challenge, which invites participants to swim daily in the sea, lakes, or rivers throughout the month.
The initiative began in 2020 when a group of NUI Galway students undertook a daily sea swimming challenge from Blackrock at the end of the Prom, raising €15,000 for Helplink’s mental health services. Their inspiring efforts laid the foundation for the national COLDTOBER event that has since gained significant traction.
Since its inception, COLDTOBER has transformed into a nationwide phenomenon, attracting participants from 21 counties across Ireland—from the rugged coastline of Galway to the serene shores of Cork—highlighting the growing interest in cold water therapy and its mental health benefits.
The challenge has also resonated with participants globally, showcasing its universal appeal. Swimmers have braved cold waters in locations as far-flung as Canada, Boston, Indonesia, and even the Ganges River in India. This year, Helplink hopes to see increased participation from Irish expatriates, particularly those who have emigrated in recent years.
Based at the Plaza on the Headford Road in Galway city, Helplink Mental Health is a leading provider of accessible, free, or low-cost mental health services for children, young people, and adults. Funds raised through COLDTOBER directly support these vital services, including 24/7 counselling options available nationwide and an online counselling service for the Irish abroad.
