Heartland Community Health Center is set to host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new Bluestem Wellness Building, which will enhance its psychiatry and behavioral health services. The event will take place at 4 p.m. on Thursday, September 26, at the new facility located at 534 Michigan St., just east of the main building at 1312 W. Sixth St.
The Bluestem Wellness Building will feature various spaces dedicated to individual therapy, play therapy, psychological testing, and psychiatric care suites. Additionally, there will be a multipurpose room for group therapy and other programs, while the second floor will house administrative offices for billing and a centralized call center.
“The public is welcome to attend the ribbon-cutting, and the building will be open afterward for tours,” said Julie Branstrom, CEO of Heartland.
The $1.33 million project, which broke ground in November 2023, received funding from multiple sources: over $580,000 in federal grants, $325,000 in regional grants, and $420,000 in local philanthropic contributions.
Branstrom emphasized Heartland’s commitment to providing high-quality care, particularly in behavioral health. “The need for these services continues to increase, and we recognize the crucial role mental health plays in overall well-being. This new building not only expands access to care but also creates an environment where individuals feel comfortable seeking help.”
The Bluestem Wellness Building will open to patients on October 1. Heartland Community Health Center serves as a federal safety net clinic, offering care to insured, uninsured, and underinsured patients, including a food pantry, pharmacy, dental care, and reproductive health services.
In 2023, Heartland provided mental health services to 4,830 patients, with 1,414 seen by Behavioral Health staff and the remainder managed by Family Medicine or Pediatrics providers.
