Solstice has announced the hiring of Shawnee Basden as its new Manager of Adult Mental Health and Consultant Psychologist. This appointment marks a significant step forward for the mental wellness center, enhancing its capacity to deliver high-quality mental health services and expand research opportunities both locally and internationally.
Dr. Basden brings extensive experience to her role, having completed her PhD in Clinical Psychology at Boston University, where she was awarded the Martin Luther King Research Fellowship. She further honed her skills during a pre-doctoral internship at Brown University Medical School, focusing on veterans with depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and traumatic brain injuries. Her postdoctoral training at Oxford University centered on treating individuals with eating disorders.
Since returning to Bermuda in 2011, Dr. Basden has worked at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital’s rehabilitative day hospital, providing specialized care for patients with traumatic brain injuries and managing the mood and memory clinic for dementia diagnoses. In addition to her clinical work, she serves as an educator, teaching at Bermuda College and internationally, and is the vice-president of the Bermuda Psychological Association.
“I am excited to join a dynamic team committed to enhancing access to top-tier mental healthcare in Bermuda,” said Dr. Basden. “I hope to introduce new developments that will contribute to our thriving practice, expand access to mental health research, and provide specialized therapeutic services.”
In her new position, Dr. Basden will offer specialized clinical services, including comprehensive psychological assessments and evidence-based treatments. She will also prepare court reports, supervise fellow professionals, and lead a multidisciplinary team to uphold high care standards. Additionally, she will identify gaps in Bermuda’s mental health services and develop new clinical programs tailored to community needs.
Kelly Madeiros, co-founder of Solstice, expressed enthusiasm about Dr. Basden’s appointment: “This is a fantastic opportunity for Solstice. Her expertise will elevate our clinical services and research initiatives, reinforcing our position as a leader in mental healthcare in Bermuda.”
With Dr. Basden on board, Solstice plans to expand its offerings at The Assessment Centre for older adults and individuals with brain injuries, as well as introduce new evidence-based programs aimed at addressing the unique mental health challenges faced by the Bermuda community.
