Global — Oceanic, a leading global marine services provider, has announced a partnership with VIKAND to integrate mental health training into its SeaMed24 Medical Solutions services. This collaboration will introduce VIKAND’s specialized training programs to Oceanic’s maritime clients, focusing on enhancing officers’ understanding and management of mental health issues at sea.
The partnership will roll out two training modules designed to improve officers’ ability to identify and address mental health concerns among crew members. The programs aim to educate officers on recognizing signs of mental health issues, including potential risk factors for suicide and self-harm, and provide strategies for offering initial support to colleagues in distress.
Developed as part of VIKAND’s OneHealth structured learning programs, these modules align with industry standards such as RightShip’s Inspection Ship Questionnaire (RISQ) 3.0. The training emphasizes the importance of proactive prevention and early intervention, crucial for maintaining mental health in the challenging maritime environment.
Kyriakos Hadjikyriakou, Managing Director of Oceanic, highlighted the significance of this initiative: “Incorporating VIKAND’s mental health modules into our services is a vital step in offering comprehensive support to our client base of over 2,300 vessels. This collaboration reflects our commitment to the well-being of seafarers, ensuring they receive the necessary resources to manage their mental health while at sea.”
Ronald Spithout, Managing Director of OneHealth by VIKAND, underscored the program’s focus on reducing stigma and addressing sensitive topics. “Our approach centers on prevention and early intervention. It’s crucial to equip officers with the skills to recognize and address mental health issues before they escalate. We also aim to break down the stigma surrounding mental health by openly addressing issues like suicide and self-harm,” Spithout said.
The partnership between VIKAND and Oceanic is part of a broader mission to enhance the safety, welfare, resilience, and overall happiness of seafarers, supporting their long-term health and well-being through targeted programs and services.
