Edmonton — Alberta’s Minister of Mental Health and Addiction, Dan Williams, has announced a $70 million investment over the next three years to expand mental health support in schools across the province. The funding will be directed to CASA Mental Health with the aim of establishing up to 60 specialized mental health classrooms.
At a press event in Edmonton, Williams outlined that these classrooms will offer tailored support for students, including individual and group therapy, psychiatric care, medication management, and continued education designed to meet each student’s specific needs.
The announcement was made in the presence of key figures including Ken Wlos, principal of Bev Facey Community High School; Bonnie Blakley, CEO of CASA Mental Health; Janet Hancock, board chair of CASA Mental Health; Alicia Long, a parent of a former CASA Mental Health Classroom student; and Cathy Allen, board chair of Elk Island Public Schools.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance mental health resources within educational settings, providing crucial support to students facing complex mental health challenges while ensuring their academic progress continues.
