Move With You Waihī Beach is returning this year, promising to be bigger and better than its successful debut. The event, dedicated to promoting mental health, encourages participants to engage in physical activities to support mental well-being.
Last year’s inaugural event attracted over 125 participants, prompting the Live Well Waihī Beach team to expand the event for this year. Participants can choose from three challenges to complete over the course of a month: running a marathon distance (42km), covering an Ironman distance (226km), or climbing the Waihī Beach Trig 25 times. Challenges can be undertaken individually or as part of a team, and participants can complete them at their own pace.
New additions to this year’s event include a beach yoga session on the first Saturday and two hikes organized in collaboration with the Echo Walking Festival.
The event aligns with Gumboot Friday and was developed based on community feedback, according to Cindy Clare, community coordinator. Clare explained, “Residents indicated a need for an event that encourages people to check in on their friends’ and whānau’s mental health while also promoting physical activity. That’s how Move With You Waihī Beach came to be.”
The event’s name reflects its inclusive nature, allowing people of all abilities to participate. Clare noted, “Some individuals prefer biking or paddling, while others might use a wheelchair. Move With You Waihī Beach is designed to be accessible to everyone.”
The event will culminate in a celebration at the Waihī Beach Surf Club on November 3, featuring music, food, children’s games, and a keynote address by event ambassador Miriama Smith.
