Members from ten boxing clubs have completed a comprehensive two-day Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training, organized by Mental Health First Aid Ireland and supported by the HSE. This training, tailored for adults who support young people aged 12 to 18, equips participants to assist those experiencing mental health issues or crises until professional help is available.
The course covers practical, evidence-based action plans and addresses key topics such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, psychosis, and substance use problems. Research indicates that MHFA training enhances knowledge of mental health issues, reduces stigma, and boosts confidence and willingness to provide first aid.
The training was made available to all clubs through the Irish Amateur Boxing Association (IABA). Participating clubs included:
- Lucan, Dublin
- Saviours Crystal BC, Waterford
- Ballymote BC, Sligo
- Golden Gloves BC, Cork
- Smithfield BC, Dublin
- St. Catherine’s BC, Dublin
- Whitechurch BC, Dublin
- St. John Bosco ABC, Donegal
- Cove Boxing Club, Cork
- Crumlin Boxing Club, Dublin
