West Liberty, W.Va. – West Liberty University (WLU) is expanding its mental health support services for the upcoming academic year, introducing new initiatives aimed at bolstering student well-being. The university is committed to fostering an environment conducive to both academic and personal growth through innovative mental health resources.
One of the key developments is the opening of the new Zen Den, located on the second floor of the Student Union. This serene space is designed to offer students a peaceful retreat from the pressures of academic life. The Zen Den features comfortable seating, soft lighting, calming sounds, and a variety of self-help resources to promote relaxation and mindfulness.
The establishment of the Zen Den was funded by a $7,000 Youth Empowerment grant. The initiative was spearheaded by student Courtney Ellifritz in collaboration with Lisa Witzberger, Director of Counseling Services. The Zen Den underscores WLU’s commitment to a holistic approach to student well-being.
In addition to the Zen Den, WLU is continuing its partnership with BetterMynd, an online platform that connects students with licensed mental health counselors. This collaboration enables students to schedule confidential virtual counseling sessions at their convenience, making mental health care more accessible and flexible. The partnership with BetterMynd ensures that WLU can offer comprehensive support tailored to the diverse needs of its student body.
“Our goal is to create a supportive environment where students feel empowered to prioritize their mental health,” said Lisa Witzberger. “The launch of the Zen Den and our ongoing partnership with BetterMynd provide multiple avenues for support, helping students thrive both academically and personally.”
WLU’s proactive approach to mental health underscores its dedication to providing students with the resources they need to succeed.
