Saeed Saeed, a features writer for The National, has been selected for the 2024-25 Rosalynn Carter Fellowship for Mental Health Journalism. This prestigious fellowship, named after Rosalynn Carter, co-founder of the Carter Center, aims to enhance the quality and accuracy of mental health reporting in the media. The National administers the fellowship program in the UAE on behalf of the US-based non-profit Carter Center.
Since its inception in the 1990s, the fellowship has honored over 200 journalists globally. Saeed will undertake a year-long, non-residential fellowship beginning this month, receiving specialized training from experts and mentors in the US, along with support from advisers in the UAE.
Saeed is the tenth journalist in the UAE to be awarded this fellowship since The National began overseeing the program locally in 2018. His fellowship project will explore the intersection of mental health and the Arabic music scene, focusing on how a new generation of artists is addressing mental health in their creative expressions and public discourse.
He will succeed Abeer Khan of Al Arabiya, who used her fellowship year to report on the emotional, social, and cultural experiences of expatriate fathers in the UAE.
The Rosalynn Carter Fellowship continues to support journalists in producing impactful mental health reporting, fostering a better understanding of mental health issues through informed and compassionate journalism.
