BLUFFTON, S.C. (WSAV)—Following the recent death of Stanley Kotowski on Hilton Head Island, the conversation around mental health has intensified. Kotowski’s struggle underscores the ongoing challenges faced by those dealing with mental health issues.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in the Lowcountry is committed to supporting local residents grappling with mental health conditions. The organization works to overcome the stigma that often deters individuals from seeking help, which can lead to unhealthy coping mechanisms.
“Often, people are not at a crisis point but are pre-crisis, managing their struggles through unhealthy means such as alcohol or addiction,” said Michelle Casey, Executive Director of NAMI Lowcountry. “By learning about our services and knowing we exist, individuals can sometimes prevent a crisis.”
Casey recognizes that seeking help can be daunting but assures that NAMI provides a supportive environment. “We want people to know that when they come to us, we understand and empathize with their experiences,” she said.
NAMI offers a range of services, including educational classes, family-to-family mental health education, and support groups. The organization’s helpline is available Monday through Friday from 10 AM to 10 PM at 800-950-6264 or via text by sending HELPLINE to 62640. For those in immediate crisis, the number to call is 988.
