York has secured over £2.4 million in funding to establish a new 24/7 mental health hub, set to be developed in Acomb over the next two years. This new facility will offer round-the-clock support to adults without the need for a referral.
The York Mental Health Partnership (YMHP) will oversee the operation of the hub, which will be staffed by a combination of NHS professionals and volunteers, including clinicians, social workers, and peer support workers. The exact opening date and location of the hub are yet to be determined.
YMHP highlighted that the new hub will provide vital support in a “calm and comfortable environment,” enhancing mental health services in the region. For the past two years, the “Connecting our City” initiative has been working on developing a community-based mental health hub model for the western part of York, with plans to introduce another hub in the northern area of the city. Future plans include a third hub in the eastern part of York to ensure comprehensive coverage across the city.
Professor Lynne Gabriel OBE, co-chair of YMHP, praised the successful acquisition of funding from NHSE, emphasizing the project’s innovative approach. “With this funding secured, we are excited to expand our services into a 24/7 community mental health hub—a crucial and much-needed advancement,” she stated.
Alyson Scott, CEO of York Mind, commended the collaborative efforts that have brought together statutory and voluntary services alongside individuals with lived experience. “The process has united us, overcoming challenges and strengthening our partnership,” Scott added.
