DELTA — The First West Foundation has awarded a $25,000 grant to The Step Forward Health Society, significantly advancing their efforts to offer accessible mental health support in Delta. This funding will primarily support the “When Love Hurts” initiative, a vital program for women experiencing partner abuse.
The grant will facilitate the establishment of “When Love Hurts” support groups in both North and South Delta. These 20-week programs, provided free of charge to participants, will feature group and individual counseling sessions led by Registered Clinical Counsellors. The initiative aims to support up to 24 women, providing a safe and supportive environment to share their experiences and mitigate feelings of isolation.
The Step Forward Health Society, based in Ladner, is committed to overcoming barriers to mental health services. Their diverse range of programs includes Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), support groups for LGBTQ+ youth, creative mindfulness sessions for chronic pain management, and financial aid for low-income clients. These services ensure comprehensive support for individuals, couples, and families in Delta and neighboring areas.
Meg Neufeld, President of The Step Forward Health Society, emphasized the impact of the grant. “The support from First West Foundation is essential for extending our reach to those in need of mental health services,” Neufeld said. “Their generosity enables us to offer our programs at no cost, removing financial barriers and ensuring that individuals can access the help they need.”
The “When Love Hurts” program addresses the critical need for support services for women affected by abuse. Statistics indicate that one in three women in Canada experiences partner abuse, with significant long-term health, economic, and social consequences. By providing a group setting, the program aims to reduce isolation and foster a supportive community for participants.
In addition to the “When Love Hurts” initiative, The Step Forward Health Society will host the “Step Forward Together” fundraising event at The Red Barn at Southlands Grange on November 16. This event will showcase the society’s mission and programs while raising additional funds to expand their services. Attendees can look forward to live music, a live auction, several speakers, and information on how to support The Step Forward Health Society’s efforts.
