A 31-year-old financial planner from Wroughton is preparing to undertake a 100km walk to support a local mental health charity.
Dave Southby, who runs Dave Southby Financial Planning, aims to raise £2,500 for The Kelly Foundation, a Swindon-based charity focused on bridging the gaps in mental health support services. Alongside his team, Southby will walk the Thames Path over the weekend of September 14-15.
The Kelly Foundation takes a holistic approach to mental health, addressing both the symptoms and root causes of mental health struggles. The charity provides tailored assistance to individuals facing a range of challenges, including financial stress and relationship issues, helping them build resilience and improve their overall well-being.
Southby, whose firm serves the Swindon and North Wiltshire areas, is particularly attuned to the connection between financial stress and mental health. Both he and his team are trained as mental health first aiders, frequently encountering clients grappling with anxiety related to their financial circumstances.
“In our line of work, we often see firsthand how financial stress can severely impact mental health,” said Southby. “By partnering with The Kelly Foundation, we hope to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those struggling within our community.”
Southby has already secured sponsorship from 13 local businesses, which will be prominently displayed on the team’s shirts during the walk. In addition, he has received individual donations through a Just Giving page, which has raised £1,260 from 17 supporters so far.
“I’m passionate about supporting mental health initiatives, and The Kelly Foundation does incredible work in our community,” Southby added. “The 100k Thames Path Walk is a significant challenge, but knowing it’s for such an important cause provides all the motivation we need. I’ve set a goal of raising £2,500, and I’m thrilled to have already raised over half that amount before we’ve even started.”
The funds raised will directly support The Kelly Foundation’s efforts, enabling them to provide 125 hours of vital mental health support, equating to 12 weeks of assistance for 10 individuals in need.
