Butte, Montana — As Montana Tech’s students return to campus this fall, Clinical Counselor Cara DeBolt is dedicated to helping them access essential mental health and community resources.
Hired in March 2024 following an extensive search, DeBolt is committed to making counseling approachable and accessible. “There is a counselor here now,” DeBolt said. “I want students to know that counseling doesn’t have to be intimidating or strictly clinical. I’m here to support in any way I can, whether it’s for everyday concerns, life transitions, or just a chat. I have a great sense of humor and aim to be someone students feel comfortable talking to.”
DeBolt’s office is located in SUB 107A on the lower level of the Student Union Building, behind Student Health Services and near the Food Pantry. She also maintains a welcoming waiting area in SUB 107B. Additionally, she spends part of each Tuesday at Highlands College. DeBolt assists students with various issues, including social anxiety, relationship difficulties, and other life challenges. She is also a resource for connecting students with community services, both for mental health and other needs.
“I am a client-centered counselor,” DeBolt explained. “Students can come to me for a single session or regularly, depending on their needs. I’m here to listen and support.”
Counseling services provided by DeBolt are free and confidential for both Montana Tech and Highlands College students. “I can’t disclose whether a student is receiving counseling,” DeBolt emphasized. “Even if a professor refers a student, I do not report back to them. Confidentiality is crucial, except in cases where there is a risk of harm.”
In her first year, DeBolt saw around a dozen students and is hopeful for a larger caseload this academic year. She has engaged with students through events such as Late Night Breakfast, Orientation, and Registration Rallies to raise awareness of her services. Drop-in hours are also planned for this fall.
Beyond on-campus support, Montana Tech students have access to Mantra Health, an online telehealth service offering wellness coaching, clinical counseling, and 24/7 crisis care. Last year, 193 students utilized Mantra Health, representing approximately 8.5% of the student population.
