Connah’s Quay Town Football Club has received the esteemed FAW Together Stronger Award in recognition of its outstanding work in promoting mental health and well-being within the community.
The award, which celebrates grassroots football clubs for their impactful contributions off the pitch, was presented to the club following a nomination by Jack Sargeant, Member of the Senedd for Alyn and Deeside.
Sargeant, a longstanding supporter of the club’s mental health initiatives, commended Connah’s Quay Town for its dedication. “This award is a wonderful acknowledgment of the hard work being done at Connah’s Quay Town,” he said. “The club is making significant strides in supporting our community. I’m immensely proud of their efforts and grateful to the FAW for highlighting the importance of mental health advocacy. Creating spaces where people can openly discuss mental health is crucial for saving and improving lives.”
Connah’s Quay Town has been active in creating opportunities for open discussions about mental health. Their “Talk and Walk” sessions offer a supportive environment where individuals can engage in conversations about mental health issues, aiming to dismantle the stigma that has traditionally surrounded the topic.
Rob Ross, Chairman of Connah’s Quay Town, expressed his appreciation for Sargeant’s nomination and emphasized the crucial role of volunteers in the club’s achievements. “This recognition belongs to the volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes,” Ross said. “Their efforts have been instrumental in making mental health and well-being an open topic, something that was unfortunately not always the case.”
The club has also introduced Well-being Champions—volunteers trained to guide individuals to relevant support services. Their initiatives have not only benefitted the local community but have also inspired other football clubs to engage in similar mental health advocacy.
Following their success with the FAW Together Stronger Award, Connah’s Quay Town has been nominated for the FAW National Awards. The club is also set to collaborate with representatives from McDonald’s, the award sponsors, who are interested in further supporting their mental health campaign.
