Dr. Mike Freelander, the federal Member for Macarthur, has announced that Campbelltown will be one of four new sites selected for a Medicare Mental Health Centre, slated to open next year.
Dr. Freelander expressed enthusiasm about the development, stating, “The Medicare Mental Health Centre in Campbelltown will be a significant enhancement to the health services available in our community.”
He emphasized the broader impact of the facility, noting that “access to professional mental health support will not only assist individuals directly but will also benefit families, workplaces, and the entire community.”
The new centres will offer free, walk-in mental health support and care, addressing immediate distress and providing ongoing treatment for more complex conditions. Each centre will be staffed by multidisciplinary teams, including social workers, nurses, and peer support workers, delivering comprehensive care during extended hours.
In a move to further support mental health services, the Albanese Government is investing an additional $29.9 million to ensure that psychologists and psychiatrists are available on call at each centre.
The government’s expansion plan includes 61 Medicare Mental Health Centres nationwide, with 22 set to be established in New South Wales. The Federal Albanese Government has allocated $17.1 million for the creation of these new facilities.
The services are anticipated to commence in mid-2025, with exact locations to be finalized following community consultations and co-design processes.
