Amidst an escalating mental health crisis affecting children across the United States, Google has taken a significant step by addressing the issue where it often manifests most: in schools. Recognizing the urgent need for mental health support in educational settings, Google’s philanthropic division has committed to funding mental health projects in high schools through a popular classroom crowdfunding platform.
On Monday, Google.org made a substantial impact by fully funding all mental health-related projects listed on DonorsChoose, a charity platform that enables public school teachers to request supplies and resources. With an infusion of $10 million and the collaboration of actress and mental health advocate Selena Gomez, Google aims to prioritize mindfulness and mental wellbeing as integral parts of the educational experience as the new school year begins.
The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated mental health challenges among students, leading to heightened levels of depression, anxiety, and behavioral issues. In response, school districts have increasingly relied on teachers to provide psychological support. However, experts note that despite the growing focus on mental health, there has not been a corresponding increase in philanthropic funding dedicated to this area.
Earlier this year, Google.org announced its commitment to supporting nonprofits focused on children’s mental health and online safety. With Monday’s initiative, which also includes $500 vouchers for eligible DonorsChoose campaigns, Google has raised its total pledge to $25 million, underscoring its dedication to addressing the mental health needs of young people in educational settings.
