Local car enthusiasts in Maple Ridge recently came together for the 2nd annual STORM Show and Shine event, raising nearly $1,000 in support of men’s mental health programs at The Family Education and Support Centre. Hosted at Ridge Church, the event attracted a passionate crowd, eager to make a difference in their community.
Jerrica Hackett, organizer of Stop Overdose Ridge Meadows, highlighted the broader mission behind the event, emphasizing the importance of community connection, education, and awareness in tackling issues like substance use and the toxic drug crisis.
“We believe this event is crucial for engaging with the community, providing education, and reducing the stigma surrounding substance use and the toxic drug crisis,” Hackett said.
The Show and Shine event successfully raised $900, with additional donations expected from upcoming activities. One such event is a free screening of the documentary Toxic at Hollywood 3 Cinemas in Pitt Meadows on Aug. 29.
Looking ahead, STORM will also host an International Overdose Awareness Day event on Saturday, Aug. 31. This event will feature Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Bob D’Eith and motivational speaker Guy Felicella, alongside an open mic segment for those personally affected by the overdose crisis to share their stories.
Hackett noted, “We want to provide a platform for those impacted by this crisis to express their thoughts and feelings, and to foster a supportive community environment.”
