Michigan City, IN – This fall, Franciscan Health Michigan City and Franciscan Health Munster will be offering free, one-day courses designed to equip individuals who regularly interact with young people with the tools and knowledge needed to support youth facing mental health challenges.
These intensive workshops will provide participants with an introduction to common mental health issues affecting youth, a review of typical adolescent development, and training in a five-step action plan to assist young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered in the course include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders that may involve psychosis, disruptive behavior disorders such as ADHD, and eating disorders.
The program is particularly beneficial for adults who have regular interactions with adolescents aged 12 to 18, including parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, counselors, health and human services workers, and any other adult involved in the lives of young people.
The Mental Health First Aid for Youth in Crisis course is scheduled for Thursday, September 12, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Central Time at the Franciscan Health Michigan City Legacy Campus, located at 301 W. Homer St. in Michigan City. Lunch will be provided during the workshop. While the course is free, participants must register in advance to attend.
This initiative reflects Franciscan Health’s ongoing commitment to supporting mental health awareness and education, ensuring that those who work closely with young people are equipped to recognize and respond to mental health crises effectively.
