CUMBERLAND COUNTY — As Cumberland County Schools prepare to start the new academic year on August 26, the district has announced a series of updates aimed at bolstering both security and mental health support for students.
The school district has finalized a new contract with the city of Fayetteville to staff school resource officers (SROs) and traffic control officers (TCOs) in time for the upcoming school year. Under this agreement, all schools within Fayetteville city limits will have dedicated SROs and TCOs provided by the Fayetteville Police Department. However, CCS officials noted that the number of officers available is fewer than in previous years when the sheriff’s department managed these roles. Additionally, new weapons detection systems are being installed in schools to enhance security.
In a meeting with the Fayetteville City Council and Cumberland County Commissioners, CCS outlined its broader approach to improving student safety and well-being. Ann-Marie Palmer, Title I Coordinator of Cumberland County Schools, emphasized a focus on proactive, educational interventions to reduce behavioral issues and lower out-of-school suspension rates.
The district has also updated its student code of conduct to incorporate more modern disciplinary techniques. Alongside these changes, CCS is introducing a new mental health resource: the “Alongside” app. This tool allows students to connect with mental health professionals, access therapy resources, and discuss their concerns in a supportive environment.
Dr. Natasha Scott from Cumberland County Schools highlighted the importance of recognizing less obvious signs of mental health issues, such as a previously active and social student becoming withdrawn. The “Alongside” app aims to address these concerns and provide additional support.
