Simone Biles, the U.S. gymnastics sensation, has reaffirmed her status as the greatest gymnast of all time (GOAT) with her victory in the all-around competition at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
In a dramatic final, Biles secured her second Olympic all-around gold medal with a total score of 59.131, narrowly surpassing Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade. The competition was one of the closest in Biles’ storied career, highlighting the impressive performances of both gymnasts. Sunisa Lee, the Tokyo 2020 champion, fought through challenges to win the bronze medal.
As the results were announced, the crowd cheered as Biles, adorned with a silver GOAT chain and her gold medal, took her place at the top of the podium. Reflecting on her achievement, Biles humbly remarked, “It’s crazy to be in the conversation for greatest of all athletes. I’m just Simone from Spring, Texas, who loves to flip.”
The journey to gold was not without its hurdles. Biles experienced a minor error on the uneven bars, her historically weaker apparatus, which briefly allowed Andrade to lead. However, Biles’ perseverance and exceptional performance on the balance beam enabled her to reclaim the lead and secure victory.
This win marks Biles as only the third woman to achieve multiple Olympic all-around titles, following Larisa Latynina of the Soviet Union (1956 and 1960) and Vera Caslavska of Czechoslovakia (1964 and 1968). At 27, Biles is also the oldest woman to win the Olympic all-around title since Maria Gorokhovskaya of the Soviet Union did so at the age of 30 in 1952.
Biles’ remarkable tumbling and flawless execution contributed to her gold medal triumph, a significant comeback following her withdrawal from several Tokyo 2020 finals due to mental health challenges. This victory further elevates Biles’ status as one of the most iconic American Olympians, underscoring her evolution from a youthful prodigy to a leading advocate for mental health and survivor support.
With more event finals ahead in Paris, Biles’ influence on gymnastics continues to expand. Her achievements and advocacy have left an indelible mark on the sport, solidifying her legacy as one of the greatest athletes of all time.
No longer merely the young talent who dazzled in Rio de Janeiro, Biles has become a prominent voice for mental health and survivor rights. After the U.S. team’s gold medal win in the team final, Biles spoke about the importance of her mental health support, noting that she had met with her therapist to prepare mentally for her individual events.
