OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) — Omaha Public Schools (OPS) is advancing its commitment to student wellness by building a new mental health facility on the Benson High School campus. Partnering with Project Harmony, the district aims to address a range of mental health needs within the school community and beyond.
The new center, valued at $8 million, will span nearly 10,000 square feet and is set to be one of the largest facilities of its kind within the district. Construction is underway, with workers busy both inside and outside the Benson High campus.
“This facility will integrate education, mental health, and physical health services in a familiar environment for students,” said Angela Johanek of Benson High School. “By providing these resources on campus, we hope to address issues that may distract students from their education.”
Benson High School officials emphasize the necessity of this facility to support students facing challenges outside of school, such as difficult home situations, neighborhood issues, or traumatic experiences. Johanek noted, “If we can help students manage these challenges and focus on their mental well-being, their educational priorities can align more effectively.”
In addition to mental health services, the facility will offer dental and medical care, and will feature a training academy for students interested in careers in mental and medical fields. Johanek explained, “Students will have the opportunity to work with professionals, engage with them as resources, and potentially receive referrals for their future careers.”
Project Harmony will serve as the primary partner in providing social, emotional, and mental health care. Scott Butler of Project Harmony stated, “We will have therapists working directly with students and families, and mental health coordinators to help navigate the mental health system.”
The facility is designed to offer more than just practical support; it aims to inspire hope within the community. Butler highlighted, “Nationally, fewer than half of high school students report feeling hopeful, a key predictor of their future well-being. This center represents hope for our community.”
OPS is prioritizing safety during the construction of the new facility and plans to have it open by the end of the year.
