Local artists are harnessing their creative talents to articulate their mental health journeys and stimulate community discussions on mental wellness.
The Canadian Mental Health Association Vernon & District is set to present its annual Awakening the Spirit Art Show and Sale from July 25 to August 20 at the Vernon Community Arts Centre in Polson Park.
“Awakening the Spirit is inspirational as the participating artists focus on recovery, healing, and hope. They are tackling the stigma around mental health head-on, and their abilities and contributions to the community are not defined by their health challenges,” said Heather Kwantes, CMHA Vernon’s manager of adult integrated services.
“The goal of Awakening the Spirit is to encourage meaningful conversations around mental illness and wellness. Art can challenge our perceptions of the world around us and encourage us to consider different perspectives. Mental health is often portrayed negatively, yet there is a need for positive engagement about resiliency, courage, and how we can support each other with compassion and openness,” she added.
The show and sale are open to the public.
The Vernon Community Arts Centre operates Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. From August 5 to 16, the hours will change to Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closed on Saturday and Sunday.
This event provides an excellent opportunity for the community to engage with local art while supporting mental health awareness and advocacy.
