Will Young, celebrated musical artist and advocate for mental health, was deeply moved as he accepted an honorary degree from the University of Exeter, where he originally graduated with a degree in politics two decades ago. Returning to campus, Will received a warm reception and expressed pride and emotional gratitude for the recognition.
Beyond his successful music career, which includes six chart-topping albums and two BRIT Awards, Will has made significant contributions to mental health awareness. His podcast ‘The Wellbeing Lab’, spanning two seasons, and his recent books ‘To Be A Gay Man’ and ‘Be Yourself And Happier’, highlight his commitment to promoting mental wellbeing.
Reflecting on his student days, Will fondly recalled memories of his time near the Duryard halls of residence in Exeter, including visits to the Esso garage.
During his acceptance speech, Will spoke candidly about his experience as an openly gay contestant on Pop Idol, defying program makers’ advice not to discuss his sexuality. “I had a line I wouldn’t cross. I had greater faith in the public than the industry did and I was proved right and I was true to myself,” he shared.
Addressing the audience, Will shared insights from his journey with depression and emphasized the importance of authenticity and resilience. He acknowledged the challenges many face in silently coping with inner struggles, encouraging honesty and caution in choosing confidants who can genuinely understand and support.
Will imparted wisdom to graduates, urging them to practice kindness, empathy, and self-respect while advocating for individuality and boundaries. He stressed the lasting impact of small acts of kindness, recounting how DJ Jo Whiley’s simple gesture of sending him pictures during his treatment profoundly impacted him.
In closing, Will emphasized the power of generosity: “How you behave to others can sometimes have an effect for the rest of their lives and you might never even know and you don’t need to know.”
The University of Exeter’s recognition of Will Young not only celebrates his artistic achievements but also honors his dedication to mental health advocacy and compassion, inspiring a new generation to embrace authenticity and empathy in their own journeys.
