OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Nearly three months have passed since the devastating Arbor Day tornadoes ravaged hundreds of homes across Nebraska and Iowa, leaving a trail of destruction and emotional turmoil in their wake.
In the aftermath of such natural disasters, coping can be challenging for everyone affected, whether they experienced direct loss or not.
Recognizing this need, a therapy student from the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) has stepped up to offer emotional and psychological support to the community. This student, in collaboration with the private practice where she interns, is providing free support-group sessions throughout the month.
These sessions are available to anyone struggling to cope with the trauma associated with the tornado outbreak.
“Being a mental health counselor is not only about what happens in sessions with clients but also about how we engage with the community and advocate for their well-being,” said Taylor Trainor, a student at UNO. “I wanted to create a space where people can come together, process their experiences, and find a supportive environment to rebuild their sense of safety and community.”
The free sessions are held every Monday at 6 p.m. on the UNO campus, specifically at the Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center located at 64th and Dodge Street. A licensed mental health therapist from Radiant Counseling will also be present to oversee the sessions.
These initiatives aim to provide a safe haven for those affected, helping them navigate their emotions and begin the healing process.
