Guernsey — The number of children referred to mental health services in Guernsey increased by 14% in 2023, according to a report by the States of Guernsey. The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) received 684 referrals in 2023, up from 585 the previous year.
The report also highlighted a 10% rise in adult out-patient referrals to specialist mental health services, with 1,677 referrals in 2023 compared to 1,327 in 2022.
Concerns over cannabis use were also addressed in the report. Specialist Mental Health Services have noted an increase in individuals requiring inpatient treatment for issues related to cannabis use, including cannabis-induced psychosis. The lifetime incidence of psychosis internationally is 1% of the population, with 0.5% experiencing psychotic symptoms at any given time.
Dr. Nicola Brink, Director of Public Health, emphasized the importance of a comprehensive approach to mental health: “A ‘whole islands’ approach to mental health and wellbeing is key. Considering mental health and wellbeing in all policies will help address the social, economic, and environmental factors that impact people’s mental health and wellbeing.”
