Eva’s Casita, a peer support respite space in Orlando, has emerged as a vital sanctuary for adults in need of mental health support, particularly within marginalized communities. Opened just a month ago, it provides a nurturing environment where guests can find solace and community connection during times of crisis.
Emile Fox, a 29-year-old nonbinary barista and student, reflects on their journey battling depression and psychosis, exacerbated by feelings of isolation within both their family and the LGBTQ+ community. Despite their family’s support for their transition, Fox faced involuntary hospitalizations under Florida’s Baker Act, which left them traumatized and disillusioned with the mental health care system. These experiences highlight broader issues faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in accessing affirming and supportive care.
Roberto Carlos Katz, a mental health counselor, underscores the systemic barriers and stigma that LGBTQ+ individuals encounter in seeking mental health care. He emphasizes the necessity for LGBTQ+-affirming services to address the unique challenges and vulnerabilities faced by this community.
In response to these gaps in care, Peer Support Space established Eva’s Casita, inspired by the aftermath of the Pulse nightclub massacre. Located near downtown Orlando, it offers a homelike setting where up to four guests at a time can stay for up to six nights, free of charge. The space is staffed by a diverse LGBTQ+ team dedicated to providing peer-led support activities that foster social connection and mutual understanding.
Yasmin Flasterstein, the executive director, describes Eva’s Casita as a place of communal healing, where individuals can engage in activities ranging from counseling sessions to creative arts, all on a voluntary basis. The space aims to fill the void left by traditional clinical settings by offering a supportive environment that respects guests’ autonomy and individual needs.
Named in honor of Eva, a Puerto Rican woman known for her compassionate spirit, Eva’s Casita embodies a holistic approach to mental health support, complementing clinical care with peer support initiatives. Future plans include expanding resources and amenities, such as wellness equipment and communal spaces, to enhance the guest experience and further promote mental wellness.
For guests like Emile Fox, Eva’s Casita represents more than just a place of respite—it signifies a community where they feel understood and embraced. As Eva’s Casita continues to grow, it stands as a beacon of hope and support for LGBTQ+ individuals seeking refuge and recovery in Central Florida.
