The Community-Based and Integrated Mental Health and Psychosocial Support in Cox’s Bazar (CIMHPSS) Project, specifically through the Survey on the Knowledge, Attitudes, and Perceptions on Mental Health and Psychological Issues among Adolescents & Youth in Rohingya Refugee Camps and Host Communities, addresses critical concerns amidst the enduring Rohingya refugee crisis. This crisis has significantly impacted the mental health and well-being of both refugees and members of the host communities, particularly adolescents and youth.
Factors such as violence, prolonged displacement, limited resources, and inadequate access to quality mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) services have compounded the challenges faced by these vulnerable populations. The transition from adolescence to adulthood further complicates their situation, magnifying the effects of external stressors on their mental health.
The primary goal of the MHPSS Survey is to enhance the availability, accessibility, and quality of MHPSS services while combatting the stigma and promoting awareness about mental health issues. By conducting this survey, insights are gained into the specific mental health needs and challenges encountered by adolescents and youth in both the Rohingya refugee camps and the surrounding host communities. These findings serve as evidence to guide the development of adolescent-responsive MHPSS interventions and support systems tailored to meet the unique needs of these populations.
The MHPSS Survey is part of the broader CIMHPSS project implemented by UNFPA and its partners, with crucial support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). This initiative underscores a collaborative effort to address the mental health crisis within the Rohingya refugee population and host communities, aiming to foster resilience and well-being among adolescents and youth in Cox’s Bazar.
