The Harrisonburg-Rockingham Community Services Board (HRCSB), one of 40 community service boards in Virginia, provides services for developmental disabilities, mental health, and substance abuse disorders.
George Nipe, Director of Behavioral Health Services at HRCSB, highlights that men often refrain from seeking help due to the taboo nature of mental health discussions and pervasive social stigmas.
“Men often think, ‘I can’t talk about this because I’ll seem weak and incapable,'” Nipe explained. “It’s important for men to understand that it’s okay to need help sometimes. No one can do everything on their own.”
The HRCSB serves both children and adults residing in Harrisonburg or Rockingham County, offering intake services for new clients five days a week.
Nipe also emphasized the effectiveness of peer support groups in addressing mental health issues. The HRCSB provides therapy sessions for as low as $6 a month for those who qualify.
For clients without insurance, the HRCSB offers a resource list of alternative local therapy providers and encourages anyone seeking more information to call 540-434-1941.
