A charity and a mental health support group have partnered to create a dedicated space for footballers to discuss their mental wellbeing.
Wednesday Night FC and Man Club have launched “The Talking Tent,” a venue where individuals can openly discuss their problems with trained mental health first aiders. This initiative is set up at Oakfield Sports Centre, with the marquee conveniently located next to the football pitches.
Organizers report that the tent, established last month, is already positively impacting those who come to play football.
Adam Grocott, co-founder of Wednesday Night FC, emphasized that the club prioritizes wellbeing over winning. He described the tent as a crucial addition that has significantly enhanced the community’s ability to connect and support each other.
“We were just missing that one final piece of the puzzle—a comfortable space to convene and discuss mental wellbeing and other issues,” Grocott said. “Now we’ve got that.”
The club has made the tent accessible to everyone.
Matt Falla from Man Club expressed hope that other sports clubs around the island would adopt similar initiatives to support their members. He expressed his delight at partnering with Wednesday Night FC to create a space for people to sit, talk, share, and connect.
“We look forward to taking The Talking Tent on the road and helping to facilitate connections island-wide,” Falla said.
