The Asian Pacific Fund’s (APF) AANHPI summit recently convened at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center, bringing together a diverse array of providers, agencies, and community groups united by a common goal: addressing mental health issues within the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities. This gathering, themed ‘Reclaiming and Redefining Our Mental Health,’ sought to harness the collective wisdom of the community to tackle some of its toughest challenges.
An Innovative Approach
Setting a distinctive tone, the summit began with an opening blessing, emphasizing a departure from typical mental health discussions. Carolyn Wang Kong, President of the APF, encapsulated the summit’s mission: “The summit is really about believing that our community has the answers to our toughest problems. We just have to ask and we also have to listen. So, that’s what today is about.”
Engaging the Community
A unique feature of the event was the participation of comedian and Pulitzer Prize finalist Kristina Wong, who used humor and interactive activities to engage the audience. Wong’s approach included tossing around stuffed comfort cats to prompt discussions on wellness, highlighting that mental health improvement is a multifaceted journey. “Getting better, learning to survive every day. It’s not as easy as just seeing a one-hour therapist. They’re not one size fits all,” Wong remarked, underscoring the complexity of mental health care.
The Importance of the Summit
Kaiser Clinical Psychologist Joanne Lam stressed the significance of such a summit, noting the unique challenges faced by the AANHPI community. The summit provided a crucial platform for sharing experiences, strategies, and support systems tailored to the specific needs of this diverse group. By bringing together different stakeholders, the event fostered a collaborative environment aimed at creating more effective and culturally sensitive mental health solutions.
Moving Forward
The AANHPI summit represented a significant step in addressing mental health issues within the Asian American community. It underscored the importance of community-driven solutions and the need for a holistic approach to mental health care. As the participants return to their respective roles, the insights and connections gained from this summit are expected to inspire ongoing efforts to improve mental health services and support within the AANHPI community.
